With so much choice out there now it can be a daunting task choosing what you need for your whippet.
Maybe your puppy is now an adult and you are ready to invest in some clothes that will last. Maybe you want everything you see online but have a budget.
With this in mind, I’ve put together a guide to focus your mind and help you get the Basics that will give you maximum value for money – we will discuss the Essentials, Luxuries and Don’t Tell my Husband purchases at a later date.
For now, let’s consider the items your whippet will need.
A waterproof coat for wet days
A warm jumper for cold days
A lead and collar for all days!
Choosing by Colour:
You could choose at random, whatever catches your eye, but this is not to be recommended if you want to add, at a later date, other items that will work with these Basics. If you choose a colour theme you can add to this and all the items will work together – I’ve broken this down into 3 groups:
Light
Bright
Dark
Monochrome
Light Basics
The Hound print collar and lead set

Total Cost: Small - £130, Medium - £140, Large - £150 - an average saving of 10% over individual items
You will have a collar and lead that go with everything, a coat that is practical for most of the year, and a jumper you will come to appreciate when your whippet is chilly even at home!
Alternative Light Basics – coat in Baby Pink and Fleece in Rose, these will look great with the collar and lead.
Bright Basics
The Be Seen Hi Vis coat in Orange

This range is a must if you love bright colours, or if you have a hound who is likely to run off into the distance and you want to be sure to be able to see where they are!
The coat is great for country dwellers that might need to walk on lanes without street lights as it has reflective piping that shows up when headlights shine on it.
The leather collar will last if looked after like a pair of your favourite shoes – feed it with leather cleaner and it will build up a lovely patina over the years.
Total Cost: Small - £130, Medium - £140, Large - £150 - an average saving of 10% over individual items
Alternative Bright Basics – coat in Lime Green, Fleece in Yellow, Collar and Lead in Mustard.
Dark Basics
The Hound Print Collar and Lead set

Monochrome Basics: Norwich Coat in Dove Grey, Fleece Jumper in Black and Collar and Lead set in Mist
A very practical colour palette. The collar and lead will get used every day. The waterproof coat is perfect for wet or cold days. The fleece jumper can be either worn alone or layered below the coat for super cold days, and is also great for lounging at home.
Total Cost: Small - £130, Medium - £140, Large - £150 - an average saving of 10% over individual items
Alternative Dark Basics – Coat in Plum, Fleece in Navy, Leather Whippet Collar and Lead in Navy.
Monochrome Basics

If you love a palette of greys, black and creams, you will most likely want to dress your dog in these colours too. This range of basic items will be a great base to add to. You can introduce the Charcoal and Light Grey jumpers and a mac in the Dove Grey to give you a summer coat.
Total Cost: Small - £130, Medium - £140, Large - £150 - an average saving of 10% over individual items
Alternative Monochrome Basics – Coat in Navy, Fleece in Cream, Collar and Lead in Navy.

Whippets need clothes, they are short haired and lean, they don’t hold heat in their bodies, will feel the cold and likely hate the rain. By investing in any of the Basic ranges, even assuming you use all items just 50% of the year, the cost per wear is around £1 – less than half the cost of a take away coffee!
